What can happen in 10 minutes? You and your significant other can have a fight. You can be pushed to the edge of breakdown. You and a stranger can get to know each other. A lingerie saleslady can teach you a thing or two. You can call tech support and get high at the same time. You can try to train your husband. And you can watch an entire play: a 10-minute one.

All that and more will happen in 16 ten-minute segments on two evenings this weekend, August 23 and 24, at Island Theatre’s Third Annual Ten -Minute Play festival. Do the math: That’s 80 minutes of performance each night, or 490 minutes less than this year’s three judges had to watch to select the 16 winning entries from the 57 submitted.

In this Bainbridge Community Broadcasting podcast, Island Theatre’s Kate Carruthers, production director of the festival, tells BCB host Lyssa Danehy deHart the story behind the plays:

10-Minute Play FestivalThe playwrights are required either to live in or have a strong connection to Kitsap County, and although they are allowed to submit up to three entries, only one play per playwright is selected for performance. This year’s featured playwrights include 11 returning winners from the 2012 and 2013 festivals—James Anderson, Connie Bennett, Robert Dalton, Jeff Fraga, Charlie Hamilton, Paul Lewis, Steven Lee Palay, Miller Shor, Ulla Solberg, Ned Thorne, and Wendy Wallace—and 5 newcomers: Gwen Adams, Trish Bittman, John Ellis, John Ratterman, and Diane Walker.

Here are some more numbers: Each of the 8 directors—Susan Anderson, Diane B. Bankart, Larry Blaine, Kate Carruthers, Rozzella Kolbegger, Fred Saas, Sara Scribner, and Steve Stolee—will direct 2 plays. One person, Carruthers, is the managing director of the festival.

The cast consists of 32 Kitsap County actors, some of whom you have to know at least on Facebook, given the odds: Jessica Aubin, Noah Barfield, Tia Bannister, Victoria Brown, Robert Craighead, Barbara Deering, Robin Denis, Tyler Detrick, Tracy Dickerson, Ted Dowling, John Ellis, Ken Enright, Todd Erler, Tony Gasbarri, Rilla Hughes, Ashley Hurd, Eva Jane, Cyndi King, Dylan Lehotsky, Sam McJunkin, Jennifer Pippen-Montez, Arthur Mortell, Marybeth Redmond, Patrick Ryan, George Shannon, Miller Shor, Sandi Spellman, Bronsyn Springer, Tim Tully, SueEllen VanDuyne, Ann Wilkinson, and Andrejs Zommers.

The judges will choose one Best of the Fest play for a cash prize. And attendees will select an audience choice award each of the two nights.

The festival is recommended for ages 13 and above, as some plays include strong language and adult subject matter. Tickets are free, but donations to support Island Theatre are appreciated. The performances begin at 7:30 both evenings at Bainbridge Performing Arts, 200 Madison Ave. N.
